Washington DC (District of Columbia) is the capital of the United States. It was named after George Washington, leader of the American Revolution and the first President of the USA. DC and the city of Washington are governed by a single municipal government.
The three branches of the U.S. federal government are centered in Washington, DC. It also hosts the headquarters of the World Bank and other national and international institutions. Washington is the frequent host to large political demonstrations and protests, especially in the National Mall. Washington houses many national landmarks, monuments, and museums, and is a popular tourist destination.
The population of the District of Columbia is near 600,000. The Metropolitan Area surpasses 5 million, and if you include the Baltimore area it surpasses 8 million. Washington features four major sports franchises including the NFL's Redskins, NBA's Wizards (formerly the Bullets), NHL's Capitols, and baseball's newest franchise the Washington Generals. |
